Being a contractor: Why you should give up your job security

20/09/18 | Advice & Guidance, Business

We all know about the positives of working for someone else: regular working hours, job security, weekends to yourself and a regular salary. So why do we think you should consider giving it all up and becoming a contractor?

More money for the things/ones you love

Once you’re established and have a few regular clients that love what you do, you can expect to receive an enhanced rate of pay. The first reason for this is that you can charge more per hour than an employee and the second is that, as a limited company, your tax burden will likely be lower. This all leads to more money at the end of the month for the things that matter to you.

Variety is the spice of life

You get to decide who you work with and which projects you work on with them. If you’re not keen on a company because of their ethical decisions, then you don’t have to work for them – employees have this choice too to some degree, but they’ll have to find an entirely new job and employer. That would be quite a statement – walking out on your employer.

Work/life and office politics

You are the captain of your own ship and you control your destiny. It sounds really cheesy and such a cliché, we know – but it’s true. Being a contractor means that you can fit your work in with your life: if you want more time at home with your young kids, then fit your work around it, if you want to work every day for the entire year, that’s up to you.

If you decide to work from home the only office politics you’ll have to contend with will be between you and your dog.
