How do I choose my company name?

20/09/18 | Advice & Guidance, Business, Limited Company

Some might consider a company name a very important feature of your business, helping you to stand out from the crowd (or blend in) – assisting in creating a brand that conveys your core message. While others might see it as little more than a triviality compared to the quality of your product or service. One thing’s for sure, coming up with a name is a challenge.

Don’t forget that some of the most successful companies out there have names ranging from downright dreadful to wonderfully witty, so don’t worry too much – it’s not likely to make your business or break it.

Here are our top tips to help you come up with a name for your company:

The industrious animal

A basic, tried and tested template for coming up with a name for your company is to pick an animal with the characteristics you wish to convey and stick your industry, product or service on the end of it. Gorilla Gym Gear, Elephant Events or Buzzard Billboards are all suitably uninspiring yet acceptable candidates.

Colour + Animal

Why not go one step further and get with the times – the definite trend of the moment for naming companies is to pick your favourite animal and a colour, not forgetting to slap your industry on the backend of the name. Green Giraffe Graphics, Yellow Squirrel Storage, Red Rhino Recruitment – you get the idea. Some of them work brilliantly, while others fall flat on their face.

Take your message to the people by picking a name with some real impact: Boom, Whack, Smash, Wham, Grip, Defend, Shield, Sword all convey their own message with little more than 4 or 5 letters per name. Google, once a name only, but now a verb – is a smashing example of this.
